The seven summits refers to the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. Summiting all of the seven summits is regarded as a great mountaineering challenge. When the challenge was pioneered in the 80's, Richard Bass and Reinhold Messner postulated two different lists based on different views on how to split the continents. They differ in which mountain they regard as Oceania's highest. Messner's list include Carstensz Pyramid, while Bass' list include the significantly lower and easier Mount Kosciuszko. Since the mid 80's, about 350 people have completed at least one of the two lists, eight of them being Norwegians. I have decided to first put my effort in completing Bass' list.

The Bass list: Denali (North America), Aconcagua (South America), Mount Elbrus (Europe), Mount Kilimanjaro (Africa), Mount Vinson (Antarctica), Mt. Kosciuszko (Oceania) and Mount Everest (Asia).
